Let’s get to work! Tampere Region Capital of culture bid met the people of Nokia municipality with great enthusiasm. Opportunities for co-operation were also found when Finnish Sports Federation Tampere Region were on the meeting list.
Perttu Pesä, the director of the bid project, and Maria Peräinen, the regional coordinator, presented the basics with Nokia officials: What is the European Capital of Culture bid? Why is it a good and profitable project? What does it require and what do the citizens get from it?
In particular, they emphasized that this was not a mere “art project”. The bid is not only a cultural project, but also a quality of life, vitality, competitiveness, cooperation, identity and internationalization project.
The situation of the Capital of Culture bid is now this: The first application book has been written, it includes about 90 excellent local and regional program ideas, including ideas from Nokia, it got us to the second and decisive round, but the game has just started.
Perttu Pesä reminded the Nokia people, that the electoral panel criticized the applications of Tampere and other Finnish applicants for example about the lack of European dimension.
“Can you find partners with whom you could work? Can you find things that could increase the European dimension?” Psä challenged Nokia.
“Building the future”
Municipal coordinator Maria Peräinen said where the program is going now: “We are now going the program, each and every idea, through with the presenters of that idea,” she said.
So there were 90 program ideas in the search book, but the whole thing is still developing. Some ideas may fall out, and new ones will come. However, Perttu Pesä reminded that time passes quickly: “Now, if you want to give new, great ideas, then you have to hurry.”
The event convinced the Nokia people. “We are building future with this,” said Asta Engström, director of leisure time services from Nokia city.
Pauliina Pikka, Director of Education, also spoke with commitment about the project: “We will start assembling a project team. Maybe we will get it together next week.”
The Nokia visit was the first municipal visit in the autumn. There will certainly not be time to visit all 19 municipalities in the region during the autumn, but the municipal coordinator Peräinen promises to do her best:
“I will be happy to meet and inform all of you in order to get the municipal program going. However, here you need to be activated on a fast schedule.”
Sports are with us
In addition to municipalities, the search for the capital is contactingd a wide range of organizations. Not only art organizations are on the list, but also sports organizations belong to Pirkanmaa culture. Perttu Pesä and project coordinator Päivi Harri met the people of Finnish Sports Federation Tampere Region Friday, 18th of September.
“Today, the Tampere team had discussions full of Sport with Finnish Sports Federation Tampere Region. It was clear that there are excellent conditions for finding co-operation, ”says Pesä.
Finnish Sports Federation Tampere Region is a regional sports organization. Its area of operation is the provinces of Kanta-Häme and Pirkanmaa. There are about 800 sports clubs in the area.
